Feel your skin, especially your face. Note the characteristics. Does it feel oily, dry patchy, or any other feelings come to mind?

Try to match what you have noticed about your skin to one of the recognized skin types:
    • Oily skin- If your face represents an oil slick, you sweat a lot, and your face is covered in pimples, blackheads and/or whiteheads, you may have oily skin.
    • Dry skin- If your face is dry and flaky, or if your face gets tight after cleansing, you probably have dry skin.
    • Combo skin-A combination of either. Usually your t-zone (forehead and nose) is oily and the rest is dry or normal. Some people have sensitive oily skin. If you do, use a gentle acne-busting cleanser such as Proactiv. If you have dry and sensitive skin, look out for "for sensitive/dry skin" and read the ingredients. If there are parabens on there, don't buy.

Use products that are based on your skin type. They are specially made to deal with your skin's different nature. Using products suited for other skin types may unbalance your own skin type, so it is best to avoid them.

Be aware that as you age, your skin type will most likely change. In particular, with loss of elasticity and the ravages of time, your skin will become more dry and less responsive. You will need special products to treat this.

Try to avoid the latest craze of pretending you're a lot younger than you are when you're over 40. Your skin doesn't know this and needs proper nourishment, not plastic surgery. If you feel inclined to get it chopped up, look at Madonna, Priscilla Presley, and others, and think again. You are beautiful because you are aging, not because you are fighting reality.

If your don't know still, then take a tissue and wipe your face on it:
    • If it is black or yellow then you have oily skin.
    • If it is black with white flakes it is dry skin.
    • If it is the same old white paper, you have perfect or combo skin.
